Nion Collection

The Nion Lamp Collection is a limited edition small batch production lighting range. The complete edition is made from a single Ash tree, felled locally in London.  Each batch is made from a single tree and each lamp is designed to be produced and made entirely of the wood from this tree, including the switch and plug.

The collection includes a small side/task lamp, a desk lamp and a floor lamp. Batch quantities are kept deliberately small; dictated solely by the volume of timber provided annually by a single locally sourced tree.

The Nion Collection, New Native’s first product launch will be shipped in beautiful reusable, collapsible packaging that is designed to fold up, ready for free return post for us to reuse repeatedly to ship more lamps.

Task Lamp

This small lamp makes a beautifully warm side table light, occasional or handy task lamp.

The production concept behind the collection serves to implement a more thoughtful approach to designed products. Rather than limitless production, built on externalised environmental costs and the notion of an endless supply of resources, we are building a more suitable model that better reflects the reality of our environmental, geographical and economic circumstances. Creating an approach built on a human scale, with more appropriate resources, circular material streams and production methods. Small is beautiful.

Desk Lamp

The original Nion Lamp, this desk version inspired the creation of the task and floor lamps to become a small collection. The desk lamp is an ideal and calming home or office desk light, we even use them at home as bedside reading lights.

Each batch is produced with a unique batch and edition number, accompanied by a beautiful artwork / certificate of authenticity detailing the lamp’s origins and the location of the tree from which it was sourced.

Floor Lamp

The Nion floor lamp can truly transform a space; with a good pot plant or small tree the combination of warm light, soft wood tones and foliage make for a calming niche in any space.

Features

The collection features a wooden switch, power plug, mounting clamp and bulb holder alongside the main body of the lamp.  By using local wood; a naturally carbon storing, reusable, renewable, bio-degradable and non-toxic material, the collection intends in an entirely safe, functional yet playful way,  to avoid the unnecessary introduction of further plastic in to the present environment or future material streams.

Push Switch

Playfully designed to emulate the beautiful simplicity, form and proportion of traditional wooden toys,  this switch has delightfully satisfying sound when pushed.  Like the features below, it is completely modular,  made entirely from wood, with all parts being repairable and replaceable.

Power Plug

The plug is our greatest technical challenge in terms of safety and production is made inside and out from wood.  As far as plugs go, it’s a very pleasing plug to use indeed. Designed to fit snugly in the grip of your hand.  The internal is coated in a biodegradable non- toxic insulating rubber.

Lamp Holder

The wooden lampholder, eliminates the need a plastic alternative. It makes for a playful and beautiful solution that continues the materiality of the lamp throughout.

Mounting Clamp

The clamp is arguably the most unusual part of the Nion Lamp. These lamps don’t stand on their own. We like to use potted plants, that was the original intention at least, but they do work just as perfectly on a table edge, bookshelf, side table or bench. The choice is yours.

More about the Nion Lamp

Nion’s meaning

The collections names is an acknowledgement of an important mindset and historical tradition.  Nion (ᚅ) is the name of the 7th letter of the Ogham alphabet of the ancient Celts.  In their arboreal tradition each letter of Ogham alphabet represents a specific native tree.  The Nion character represents the Ash tree in the Ogham tree alphabet.

In its prime, this system of association served as a repeating reference and reminder that trees held myriad practical, ecological, historical, cultural, medicinal and spiritual significance to their culture, and so were not viewed as purely lifeless sources of raw material. Much of their wisdom, observations and beliefs have subsequently been validated by scientific, geological, and anthropological study.

With the delicately balanced prospect of ecological calamity looming, this attitude towards trees and the significant role they play holds perhaps as much if not more value now than it did then.
